Meta to Cease Desktop Messenger Apps by End of 2025

17 Oct 2025

Meta has announced it will terminate the standalone desktop versions of Messenger for both macOS and Windows by December 15, 2025. From this date, users will be redirected to Messenger.com or Facebook.com for accessing Messenger services.

Shutdown Details and Timeline

Starting soon, Meta will notify desktop users through in-app alerts, granting a 60-day period to transition from the app before access ceases. The upcoming shutdown aims to streamline resources and focus traffic through Meta's web ecosystem, following prior transitions to PWA models in 2024.

Access and Backup Recommendations

Meta ensures that conversation histories will remain accessible and synchronized across platforms via the web. Users are advised to use Secure Storage under Privacy & Safety settings to save end-to-end encrypted chat history. This involves setting a PIN and backing up or exporting crucial conversations and files.

Alternatives and Impact

Desktop users may switch to the Facebook desktop app available on Windows, or opt for the browser version of Messenger. Mobile versions on iOS and Android will be unaffected. Meta emphasizes preparing for this transition by bookmarking Messenger.com for file transfers and calls and testing the web interface to ensure a seamless experience.
