Meta Shuts Down Desktop Messenger Apps by December

17 Oct 2025

Meta is discontinuing the desktop Messenger apps for Mac and Windows, effective mid-December 2023. This move redirects users to the Messenger website for continued access.

App Shutdown Details

The desktop Messenger apps will be deprecated, and users will receive an in-app notification and a 60-day grace period before the apps become unusable. After shutdown, users are advised to delete the desktop app.

Usage of the mobile version of Messenger remains unaffected. Meta cites low usage and maintenance costs as reasons for this change, encouraging users to utilize Messenger.com, which remains available for non-Facebook users as well.

Chat History and Security

Meta warns that users need to enable secure storage to preserve their chat history. This feature ensures end-to-end encryption, protecting messages from unauthorized access. Users can enable secure storage through the desktop app by navigating to Settings > Privacy & Safety > End-To-End Encrypted Chats > Message Storage and turning it on. A PIN setup is required to ensure data protection.

Transitioning to these settings allows users to maintain their message history while ensuring privacy and security.
