Messenger Discontinues Desktop Apps for Windows and MacOS

21 Oct 2025

Messenger is discontinuing its desktop apps for Windows and macOS, as Meta transitions users to the web version. The apps are no longer available on Microsoft Store or Apple App Store, and sign-ins will be restricted after a brief period.

Transitioning to Web

Meta is encouraging desktop users to switch to Messenger.com. Conversations, media, and calls will remain accessible. Users can receive desktop notifications, pin the site to the taskbar or dock, or use it as an installable web app. Key features such as end-to-end encryption and calling are integrated.

Reasons for the Change

The shift leverages the trend towards mobile and browser-based usage. Native web app support in modern browsers and a focus on consolidating resources across Messenger, Instagram DMs, and WhatsApp are driving forces.

Preparing for the Transition

Users should enable Secure storage for encrypted chats and consider using Facebook's tool to download their message history. Businesses are advised to utilize the Meta Business Suite (web) for message management. For a seamless transition, set Messenger.com to open on login and activate desktop notifications.
