Meta Discontinues Facebook Messenger Desktop App

18 Dec 2025

Meta has ended support for its Facebook Messenger desktop app, effective immediately. The macOS and Windows versions are no longer available as Meta encourages users to access Messenger through the web version on Facebook or Messenger.com.

Transition to Web

The desktop version of Messenger was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic as a communication tool but struggled against platforms like Zoom due to its limitations. The app lacked features such as screen sharing and quick-join links.

Signs of this wind-down appeared in 2023, with the integration of Messenger into Facebook's main app. Over the years, the desktop app underwent several technological changes, moving through Electron, React Native Desktop, and Catalyst on macOS, which led to criticism of instability.

Implications for Users

Meta had anticipated this closure, advising users in the fall to preserve chat history by using a PIN. While native desktop support is terminated, people can still access Messenger through the web on Messenger.com without needing a Facebook account.

This move represents a strategic shift as Meta seeks to simplify its offerings and reduce maintenance complexity.
