Meta Ends Messenger Support on Windows and Mac

Meta will discontinue the Messenger app for Windows and Mac on 2023-12-15, redirecting users to Facebook's desktop app or site for messaging.

Platform Transition Details

On 2023-12-15, the Messenger app for Windows and Mac will be deprecated. Users will be unable to log in to the standalone app and will be directed to use the Facebook desktop app on Windows or the Facebook website on Mac to continue their messaging activities.

• Messenger will still be accessible via the mobile app and web version.
• Chat history will be retained if secure storage is enabled.

Secure Storage and Data Retention

Meta advises users to enable secure storage to preserve chat history. This requires accessing the Privacy & safety settings, selecting End-to-end encrypted chats, and ensuring that secure storage is enabled. Users must set a PIN from their desktop app to back up their chats before switching platforms.

Once users migrate to Facebook.com, chat history will be accessible across all platforms.

Meta has stated that these changes aim to streamline its messaging services for desktop users, ensuring consistent user experience and data security.
