Expanded Android Streaming in Windows 11 via Phone Link

07 Jan 2026

Microsoft has expanded the functionality of its Phone Link app for Windows 11, allowing users to stream their Android apps over nearly the full desktop screen. This enhancement, termed 'Expanded screen,' became available on 2026-01-07 for all users with the requisite hardware.

Functionality Overview

The new feature offers the ability to use up to 90% of the desktop for Android app streaming. Previously, Phone Link mirrored apps in a more compact view. The expanded feature commands the phone to relaunch apps in a broader layout before transmitting this to the computer, providing a more integrated experience.

However, certain apps from entities like Samsung, HONOR, and OPPO may require a restart for layout changes, and a few might appear blurry when maximized. The enhancement is part of a phased rollout, necessitating users to update via the Microsoft Store if their system doesn't automatically obtain the feature.

Device Compatibility

While most devices running Android 11 or newer are compatible, the full 'Apps' experience via Phone Link is limited to select models with the Link to Windows preinstalled. Supported phones include Samsung's Galaxy Fold, Note20 5G/Ultra, S22, S23, and S24+; HONOR's Magic4 Pro and Magic6 lines; various OnePlus and OPPO devices; and multiple models from ASUS, vivo, and Xiaomi.

This rollout represents a modest but meaningful enhancement to the Windows 11 and Android ecosystem, providing users with greater flexibility and continuity in using their mobile apps on a desktop environment. As Microsoft continues to refine this integration, it signals an ongoing commitment to cross-platform compatibility.
