RuneScape to Remove Treasure Hunter System by 2026

12 Nov 2025

Jagex will remove the Treasure Hunter microtransaction (MTX) system from RuneScape by 2026-01-19. This marks a significant shift in their approach to monetize one of the world's longest-running online games.

Player Feedback and Decisions

Earlier this year, over 120,000 RuneScape players voted for the elimination of Treasure Hunter. This vote exceeded the anticipated 100,000 responses necessary to prompt Jagex's action. The system had faced extensive criticism for allowing players to bypass core gameplay elements through purchased rewards.

Treasure Hunter, introduced after 2012's controversial Evolution of Combat update, had replaced the Squeal of Fortune system in 2014, yet continued the trend of pay-to-win mechanics that marred player experience. This decision aligns with Jagex's commitment to address player concerns and revitalize RuneScape's image.

Path Forward and Strategy

Jagex CEO John Bellamy described the removal as part of a broader revitalization effort. The upcoming 'Integrity Roadmap' aims to improve user interface and experience, address 'Dailyscape' fatigue, and modernize the game’s visual identity. This roadmap will be outlined at the 'RuneScape Ahead' event on 2026-01-19, which coincides with the game's 25th anniversary.

The removal of the Treasure Hunter system is a bold step that Jagex anticipates will rebuild trust with their community, despite impacting revenue streams. As the demand for fair gameplay rises, the studio sees an opportunity to enhance player subscriptions and engagement, banking on renewed loyalty and interest.
