Windows 11's Resume Expands to More Android Apps

11 Jan 2026

Windows 11's Resume feature is expanding its support to include more third-party Android apps, aiming to enhance cross-device continuity. Currently, the feature connects desktop and Android devices, with the goal to broaden usability and adoption in upcoming updates.

Expanded Support for Android Apps

Initially limited to apps that use Microsoft's Link to Windows solution, Resume is now extending its reach by integrating with the Windows Notification System (WNS). This integration allows a broader range of apps to adopt the feature, enhancing their compatibility with Windows 11. Developers, however, need to obtain Microsoft's approval by registering their apps through WNS, ensuring a secure and compliant implementation process.

Additionally, Spotify has been added as an example of the feature's potential use, allowing seamless transitions between devices. Although public builds previously only supported OneDrive, future support is expected to grow.

Implementation and Use

On the technical side, developers must furnish specific details, such as WNS registration information and a unique Channel URI, to enable app functionality with Resume. The feature's utility is visible in the Settings > Apps section of Windows 11, where it showcases supported apps like OneDrive and operates via CrossDeviceResume.exe. When functioning correctly, the feature is notably beneficial for users navigating between devices.

Privacy Considerations

Privacy concerns related to Resume remain minimal. The feature operates through raw notifications sent to the Windows server, which then prompts resume actions on the user's device without exposing user data. As a user-controlled option, only installed and authorized apps have the capability to utilize Resume.
