SteamFrame Supports Android Games, Easing Developer Transition

13 Nov 2025

Valve has announced that SteamFrame now supports Android games, aligning with its broader strategy to facilitate developer transitions from Quest titles using the same APKs. The integration is designed to simplify the developer process, leveraging the ARM-based architecture of SteamFrame for improved performance.

Compatibility and Performance

The SteamFrame headset, utilizing a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, offers sideloading capabilities for APKs common to Android and Meta Quest systems. Valve's Jeremy Selan stated the goal is a seamless user experience: users simply download and play their favorite titles on Steam without additional steps. Despite efficiency gains from ARM-native code, Valve will continue using its Proton layer to further enhance game compatibility on the device.

Strategic Implications for Valve

The move signals Valve's ambition to broaden SteamOS's reach across ARM devices, potentially influencing future products like laptops and handhelds. According to Pierre-Loup Griffais, these developments position SteamOS as a flexible platform adaptable to a wider variety of hardware, reflecting Valve's intentions previously hinted at during CES.
