Steam Drops 32-bit Windows Support in 2024 Update

22 Dec 2025

Valve has ended support for the 32-bit Steam application on Windows 10 and Windows 11 as of a December 19 update. The company has indicated that this change is intended to streamline software maintenance, affecting a minimal number of users.

Support Timeline and Requirements

While 32-bit Steam clients will continue to receive updates on 32-bit Windows systems until January 1, 2026, users are encouraged to transition to a 64-bit operating system if their hardware supports it. This move effectively marks the conclusion of one of the few remaining official 32-bit applications compatible with 32-bit Windows environments.

Community and Security Implications

Valve's decision may prompt enthusiasts to produce unofficial backports of contemporary clients. However, these versions will not benefit from official updates, potentially increasing security risks. The unofficial software will require community-driven maintenance. Furthermore, Valve also ceased official support for Windows 7 SP1 x64 and Windows 8.x x64 in early 2024, making any further 32-bit assistance reliant on community initiatives.
