The Outer Worlds 2 Adds Third-Person View

29 Oct 2025

The Outer Worlds 2, released by Obsidian Entertainment, now includes a long-requested third-person view, in addition to its traditional first-person perspective. This change aims to enrich the role-playing game experience by allowing players a broader view of their surroundings.

Camera and Controls

Switching to third-person view is straightforward. Players can press 'U' on a keyboard or hold the left menu button on a controller. A subsequent press zooms out further and a third tap reverts back to first-person view. This new perspective lets players admire their character's appearance.

For those who prefer third-person permanently, the game settings offer options under Settings > Gameplay. Users can choose "third-person near" or "third-person far" as the default setting and switch shoulder perspectives by holding up on the d-pad on the controller. Additionally, an "idle camera" mode offers a rotating view of the player's character.

Gameplay Implications

While the animations in the third-person mode have received mixed reviews, they provide a new way to engage with the game's environment. The feature does not lock the camera behind the character, allowing for more flexible viewing angles during gameplay.

This addition is a nod to players who enjoy a less restrictive visual experience, enhancing the game’s appeal despite any minor technical drawbacks. The feature is expected to add value for those exploring the game's detailed universe and character designs.
