Windows 11 Integrates Copilot in Taskbar Search UI

07 Nov 2025

Microsoft has introduced a new Copilot-powered search box on the Windows 11 Taskbar, aiming to enhance user experience. The updated search interface features a floating Copilot element, replacing the traditional Windows Search pane. This innovation combines search functions with chatbot capabilities in a more polished interface.

User Experience and Functionality

The updated interface showcases faster results in a single, simplified list, prioritizing apps and files over Copilot suggestions. This contrasts with the previous two-column layout. Despite these improvements, users may find the switch to the full Copilot app clunky if it isn't running initially. Users can choose to open the full app or enjoy a faster, integrated chat in the floating pane.

Vision and Voice Feature Integration

When engaged in Copilot mode, users see new Vision and Voice buttons, facilitating Copilot Vision and Copilot Voice modes on the Taskbar. Vision mode requests confirmation before any screen sharing occurs. Although the new system maintains the reliability of Windows Search APIs, Microsoft has yet to consolidate interfaces for smoother transitions.

Installation and Compatibility

The Ask Copilot feature is optional, requiring users to opt-in and install the Copilot app with no need for Copilot+ PCs. Curiously, both the old search pane icon and the new Ask Copilot box can coexist on the Taskbar, potentially causing user confusion. Microsoft suggests the new UI holds promise but acknowledges a need for improvement in app interactions and broader integration to ensure its intuitive usability.
