Copilot on Windows 11 Downgraded to Web Wrapper, Loses Taskbar Presence

01 Jul 2024

Copilot on Windows 11 has taken a disappointing turn, with Microsoft shifting its functionality to a mere web wrapper. The once prominent Copilot button is now reduced to opening copilot.windows.com in Microsoft Edge, losing its taskbar presence and deep integration into the operating system.

Initially introduced next to the Start menu button, Copilot eventually replaced the Show Desktop button, now residing in a right sidebar. Even the Win + C keyboard shortcut, previously designated for Cortana, has been replaced by Copilot.

Microsoft's Aggressive Push

Microsoft’s aggressive push for Copilot on Windows 11 included various integration tests, like the ability to change themes and settings using Copilot. Surprisingly, Copilot even made its way to Windows 10, despite the OS being on security support.

However, the latest Windows 11 update strips away these enhancements, transforming Copilot into a basic web app that lacks the previous Windows integration.

New Copilot App for Windows is… Microsoft Edge

The new Copilot app essentially functions as a portal to copilot.microsoft.com in Microsoft Edge, offering little value beyond what a standard web browser can provide. Microsoft’s minimal effort in integrating Copilot into Windows is evident, with the app lacking the ability to open or modify Windows settings.

Microsoft justifies this shift by emphasizing new features like window resizing and movement within Copilot, claiming it will enable more agile development based on user feedback. However, the company remains vague on when or if the old features will return to Copilot in Windows, leaving users questioning the necessity of this downgrade.
