Microsoft Unveils Copilot on Windows 11 Taskbar

20 Feb 2026

Microsoft has launched AI agents on the Windows 11 taskbar through the new Ask Copilot feature, replacing the traditional Windows Search. This update aims to enhance user interaction by integrating AI capabilities directly into the taskbar.

Enhanced Taskbar Functionality

Ask Copilot utilizes a new Windows shell interface, leveraging the existing search index of Windows Search but with improved speed and efficiency. Users can activate AI agents by typing '@' in the Ask Copilot window. These agents, such as the Microsoft 365 Researcher, can operate in the background for extended periods, offering progress indicators on the taskbar. Powered by ChatGPT's Deep Research, these agents provide concise summaries and facilitate deeper exploration through the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.

File Explorer Integration

In addition to taskbar enhancements, Microsoft has confirmed the integration of Microsoft 365 Copilot within File Explorer. This feature offers insights for synced or shared files, providing summaries, context, and suggested next steps when a file is selected. This integration aims to streamline workflows and improve productivity for users handling multiple files.

These features are set to roll out in the coming weeks, promising a more efficient and resource-friendly experience for Windows 11 users.
