Microsoft Enhances Windows with AI Agents and MCP

18 Nov 2025

Microsoft has introduced AI Agents and the Multi-Connector Protocol (MCP) to enhance automation within Windows. This new integration aims to streamline enterprise workflows by allowing AI agents to automate various tasks.

MCP and Agent Connectors Launch

At its recent event in San Francisco, Microsoft unveiled support for MCP in Windows, enabling AI agents to connect with third-party applications. This update includes new built-in agent connectors. These connectors allow registered applications to be accessed by agents to perform specific tasks. Two connectors, File Explorer and Windows Settings, are available in preview today. The File Explorer Connector allows agents to search, read, and modify local files using natural queries. Meanwhile, the Windows Settings Connector helps agents manage complex device configurations.

Secure Agent Workspaces

For security, Microsoft launched a private preview of the Agent Workspace in Windows. This feature provides a controlled environment where AI agents can perform tasks parallel to human users without interference. All interactions involving MCP will occur within this workspace to maintain security standards.

Improved Access with Ask Copilot

Microsoft is enhancing accessibility to AI agents through the new Ask Copilot icon on the taskbar. This feature standardizes user interaction with Copilot and other AI agents. Integration with Microsoft 365 also improves file search and management, allowing users to request AI insights directly within File Explorer. In addition, Windows Search updates and a new Writing Assistance tool for rewriting and proofreading are introduced. These improvements extend AI functionality, even enabling hands-free interaction with Copilot via voice commands.
