Steps to Remove Copilot from Windows 11 Permanently

15 Jan 2026

Microsoft has made it challenging for users to remove the Copilot feature from Windows 11, but a recent Insider preview suggests an easier solution may be forthcoming. While users await these updates, there are effective steps to disable and uninstall Copilot, ensuring it does not return.

Preventing Auto Startup

To prevent Copilot from starting automatically, users can use the Task Manager. Launch Task Manager, open the Startup tab, locate Microsoft Copilot, then right-click and select Disable. Restart the PC to apply these changes.

Blocking Auto Installation via Registry

Another method involves modifying Windows Registry settings. Open Registry Editor and accept the User Account Control prompt. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows. In the Windows key, right-click, select DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it "TurnOffWindowsCopilot". Double-click this entry and set the value to 1 before restarting your PC.

Uninstalling the Copilot

The uninstall process requires accessing Windows Settings. Go to Settings > Apps, find Copilot, click the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall. Completing these steps should ensure Copilot is permanently removed and does not return after subsequent system usage.
