Windows PowerShell Introduces Pane Splitting Feature

10 Nov 2025

PowerShell users can now enjoy a lesser-known feature: pane splitting within a single window or tab, offering improved navigation and multitasking capabilities. Despite its benefits, only 20% of users reportedly leverage this feature regularly.

Pane Splitting Mechanics

This feature allows users to split their screen into multiple sections, simplifying the task of viewing several terminals simultaneously without adjusting window sizes. Users can employ simple shortcuts: pressing Shift + Alt + + splits the screen horizontally while Shift + Alt + - performs a vertical split.

Among other shortcuts, Shift + Ctrl + W closes the focused pane and Shift + Alt + D duplicates the pane. Additionally, the Split tab function from the command menu can be used to divide a pane into two in the larger direction. Navigation between panes is managed with Alt and direction keys.

User Adoption and Potential

Although the pane splitting feature is innovative, it remains underutilized, with only a fraction of PowerShell users aware of its existence. Integrating this capability could enhance productivity, especially for users managing multiple tabs or high-resolution monitors.

  • Feature: Pane splitting available in PowerShell.
  • Adoption: Only 20% of users utilize regularly.
  • Usage: Supports easier navigation and multitasking.
  • Shortcuts: Split, duplicate, and manage panes with keystrokes.

Introducing users to this feature may significantly elevate their PowerShell experience by promoting more efficient workflows.
