Unlock Windows 10 Updates with Free ESU Registration

18 Nov 2025

Windows 10 users can access Extended Security Updates (ESU) for free until October 14, 2026, within the European Economic Area (EEA).

Registration Process and Requirements

Home users must use a Microsoft account to sign in and register for ESU in Windows Update.

  • Ensure Windows 10 is activated under Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  • Open Microsoft Edge and enter: ms-settings:windowsupdate-esu?OCID=WEB_EOS_CY25_ESU&source=WEB.
  • Follow the prompts to register for ESU.

If errors occur, restart your PC and try the command again.

Common Issues and Region Restrictions

If free options are missing, verify region settings under Time & Language > Region. Free ESU is available only in the EEA.

  • Set the region to an EEA country and delete the registry key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\DeviceRegion.
  • Assure system restart after changes.

Windows 10 Enterprise and Education are excluded, and issues may arise if linked to work or school accounts, which should be disconnected under Accounts > Access to work or school.

Troubleshooting and Alternatives

For persistent problems, perform a repair in-place upgrade with the latest installation media. This retains programs and data and can resolve registration issues.

Once registered, confirm in Windows Update that the PC is eligible for free ESU.
