Autobahn FAQ

In Germany, sections of the autobahn that are unrestricted are usually indicated by the absence of speed limit signs. Additionally, these areas are often marked with a white circular sign featuring a black diagonal stripe, known as the 'end of all restrictions' sign. Drivers should also be aware of changing conditions and posted signs, as speed limits can be imposed temporarily due to construction, traffic, or weather conditions.

The construction of the German autobahn is engineered for durability and high-speed travel. The overall thickness of the autobahn's pavement structure can vary, but it typically includes around 70 to 80 centimeters (28 to 31 inches) of layered materials. This generally consists of several layers: a 20 to 30 cm thick base layer, a 20 to 30 cm thick binder course, and a final top layer of asphalt that is about 10 to 15 cm thick.

The German autobahn is a network of high-speed highways in Germany known for having long stretches without a mandated speed limit. It is one of the densest and most advanced highway systems in the world, spanning over 13,000 kilometers (8,080 miles). The autobahn is well-regarded for its high-quality construction and engineering, which enables safe travel at high speeds. It is essential for both domestic and international traffic and plays a crucial role in Germany's transportation infrastructure.

While official speed records on the autobahn are not typically maintained due to safety concerns and legal restrictions, there have been reports of exceptionally high speeds. One of the most notable unofficial reports includes a speed of 432.7 km/h (268 mph) achieved by a tuning company in a modified Porsche 911. However, these speeds are not standard and are usually achieved under controlled conditions with professional drivers.

The absence of a general speed limit on the German autobahn is partly rooted in history and economic considerations. Initially, the autobahn was designed in the 1930s to enable high-speed travel for rapid military and civilian transport. Economically, many believe it boosts efficiency and supports the automotive industry by allowing high-performance vehicles to use the roads as intended. Additionally, there is a cultural element, as many Germans view driving at high speeds on the autobahn as a symbol of freedom and technological prowess.

LucasPhillips Autobahn is okay, not the best out there. It has nice features but unintuitive sometimes. It's great for quick trips, but I wish it offered better alternative routes on longer drives.

HannahWright I really liked using Autobahn. The route suggestions are often helpful, especially during rush hours. I also enjoy the traffic updates, but sometimes they lag a bit. Overall, I’m satisfied!
