Windows 11 users have recently encountered an unexpected change: the automatic enabling of OneDrive folder backup without explicit permission. While the feature is undeniably useful when intentionally activated, Microsoft’s decision to turn it on without user consent has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions about the company's approach.

Shady Tricks

Automatic folder backup in OneDrive can be a lifesaver, ensuring that important files are always safely stored in the cloud. However, the manner in which Microsoft has implemented this feature has been less than transparent. Instead of relying on user prompts and notifications, the tech giant has opted to enable the feature by default, without informing users or seeking their approval.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has been accused of using questionable tactics with its software. Just a few months ago, users noticed that OneDrive required an explanation before allowing them to close the application. Similarly, the Edge browser has been known to ask users why they are downloading Chrome, adding another layer of friction to what should be straightforward actions.

What’s Microsoft’s Side of the Story?

In response to the growing concerns, Microsoft has made some adjustments, though not necessarily in the way users might have hoped. Sean Endicott points out that Microsoft has removed a guide that previously detailed the benefits of using a local account. The guide stated: “A local account is created on the device and doesn’t require Internet connectivity to sign in. It’s independent of other services, and it’s not connected to the cloud. Your settings, files, and applications are limited to that single device.”

These features sound more like benefits than drawbacks, especially for users who value privacy and control over their data. Many argue that Microsoft should provide a clear and obvious way to opt for a local account during the initial setup process, rather than pushing cloud-based solutions by default.

Bit of an Acquired Taste

For some, these changes are seen as part of a broader trend where tech companies prioritize cloud integration and data collection over user autonomy. While OneDrive’s automatic folder backup can be incredibly convenient, it’s essential for users to have control over such features and to be fully informed about what’s happening with their data.

As Microsoft continues to evolve its services and software, striking a balance between convenience and transparency will be crucial. Users need to feel that their preferences and privacy are respected, even as they benefit from advanced features like OneDrive folder backup.
