Microsoft has taken a bold step by enabling OneDrive backups in Windows 11 by default, without prior notice or user consent. This move has sparked a wave of complaints from users who feel that their autonomy has been compromised. The tech giant's attempt to integrate its closed ecosystem more deeply into user experience has not gone unnoticed, and the backlash is palpable.

Comparative Context

For context, both Google and Apple offer online backups on their devices, but they provide users with the option to accept or decline these services before any syncing occurs. Historically, Microsoft also required explicit user activation for automatic folder backups. Users would receive recurring notifications to remind them of the feature if it wasn’t enabled. This new approach, however, assumes that everyone wants OneDrive backups activated by default, which has led to unexpected surprises for many users setting up new computers and finding their old files automatically restored.

It’s worth noting that OneDrive is one of the most affordable options for cloud backups, seamlessly integrating with Windows File Explorer. However, this convenience does not negate the fact that some users prefer to back up specific files or maintain a clean PC without ongoing activity. For these users, automatic OneDrive backups can be an unwelcome intrusion.

Deactivating OneDrive Backups

Fortunately, there is a way to deactivate OneDrive backups. Users can right-click on the OneDrive icon located in the taskbar notification area at the bottom right of their screen. From there, they should navigate to the “Sync and backup” section in the left sidebar and select “Manage backup.” Users can then deactivate all the folders they do not wish to back up to OneDrive and confirm the changes.

While this workaround exists, it is hoped that Microsoft will reconsider this decision. Allowing users to give their consent regarding the usage of its products could foster greater trust in the quality of Microsoft's offerings. Until then, users will need to manually adjust their settings to regain control over their data backups.
