12 Jul 2024

In the second half of last month, Microsoft released KB5039302 for Windows 11, an optional non-security update. Unfortunately, this update has caused significant issues for users and IT Admins alike. From taskbar malfunctions to system crashes, KB5039302 has been a headache for many.

Windows Update Agent API Issue

Adding to the list of problems, Microsoft has now confirmed another issue with the Windows Update Agent API, or WUA. According to official documentation, KB5039302 may disrupt PowerShell or VBScript scripts using the API, resulting in empty query results for certain objects and error code 0x8002802B “TYPEEELEMENTNOTFOUND.”

This bug specifically impacts client versions of Windows 11, such as 22H2 and 23H2, while server editions remain unaffected. However, regular home users and organizations with Windows Automatic Updates should not be alarmed by error 0x8002802B.

Known Issue Rollback Solution

To address this issue, Microsoft has utilized the Known Issue Rollback feature. While this feature typically resolves problems seamlessly, IT administrators may need to implement special Group Policies to address specific issues like the 0x8002802B error. The necessary policy can be accessed here and requires affected devices to be restarted and changes causing the problem to be undone.

  • This issue is resolved using Known Issue Rollback (KIR).
  • IT administrators can resolve this issue by installing and configuring the special Group Policy listed below.
  • The special Group Policy can be found in Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> .

For information on deploying and configuring these special Group Policy, please see How to use Group Policy to deploy a Known Issue Rollback.
