Windows 11 Users Report Increased Ads and Distractions from Work

27 Jul 2024

Using Windows 11 these days can sometimes feel like living with a persistent salesperson who just won't quit. Microsoft, the creator of the world's most popular desktop operating system, seems determined to bombard users with ads, subscription service offers, and constant distractions from their work.

It's frustrating to receive alerts reminding you to complete tasks you've already done, just so Microsoft can try to sell you something else. And for users who have already paid for a Windows license, it can feel like a slap in the face to be bombarded with ads.

Dealing with Distractions

To stop web results from interfering with Windows search, follow these steps:

  1. Open Regedit: You can access this by searching for "regedit."
  2. Go to HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows: Navigate through the registry editor to find this path.
  3. Create a new key called Explorer: Right-click on the Windows folder, select New > Key, and name it "Explorer."
  4. Within Explorer, create a new DWORD (32-bit) registry value called DisableSearchBoxSuggestions: Right-click on the Explorer key, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it "DisableSearchBoxSuggestions."
  5. Set its value to 1: Double-click on DisableSearchBoxSuggestions and set its value to 1.
  6. Reboot your system: Restart your computer to apply the changes.

While these changes won't eliminate all the distractions Windows 11 throws your way, they can help you reclaim some of your time and focus. Remember, it's your computer, not a billboard for Microsoft's latest offerings.
