Devolver Digital Restructures Team Amid Financial Adjustments

Indie game publisher Devolver Digital has initiated significant workforce reductions at its affiliated studios Nerial and Artificer. The London-based Nerial, known for its critically acclaimed series Reigns, has been hit by a 40 percent cut in staff. While the exact number of layoffs remains vague, Nerial’s LinkedIn lists 13 employees, a figure which may have shifted post-restructuring.

In a separate but equally impactful move, Polish developer Artificer saw its workforce reduced by more than half. Combined, these cuts contribute to a broader decrease in Devolver Digital's staffing numbers, with over 30 positions eliminated across its portfolio between the years 2023 and 2024.

Addressing Financial and Operational Challenges

Devolver Digital attributes these difficult decisions to the need for strategic realignment in light of challenges faced by some recent releases. As part of a broader tactical review, the company aims to enhance its operational efficiency and financial stability.

Despite these cutbacks, Devolver’s successful track record includes notable titles such as Cult of the Lamb, which has generated a remarkable $90 million in lifetime revenue. Similarly, Astroneer has surpassed the $80 million revenue mark.

Reigns itself has achieved over $20 million in revenue to date, highlighting the potential leverageable success within Nerial’s portfolio. However, the recent layoffs indicate that achievements alone aren’t always enough to stave off economic pressures.
