Epic Games Unveils Fab: A Unified Asset Marketplace
Epic Games is set to unveil its new unified asset marketplace, Fab, next month, marking a significant evolution in the way creators access and share digital assets. In a recent blog post, the company outlined how Fab will integrate the functionalities of several existing platforms, including the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab, ArtStation Marketplace, and Quixel.
Revenue Sharing Model
From the moment Fab launches in October until the end of 2024, Epic Games will generously share 100 percent of the revenue generated from items sold on the platform. Beginning in 2025, the revenue-sharing model will shift, allowing publishers to retain 88 percent of their sales, mirroring the structure of the Epic Games Store.
Migrating to Fab
As part of the transition to Fab, publishers currently active on the Unreal Engine Marketplace will receive invitations to migrate their content starting in mid-September. Following this, early October will see Sketchfab publishers given the opportunity to join the new platform, with additional publishers welcomed shortly thereafter, all prior to the official launch in mid-October.
Cross-Platform Support
Fab is designed to be versatile, offering assets not only for Unreal Engine but also for Unity and other game engines in the future. Epic Games has expressed its commitment to continually enhance the platform, stating, “We’ll keep adding advanced features, new content, and integrations with first- and third-party content creation tools.”
Future Developments
As Fab evolves, users can expect the introduction of new file formats, including assets compatible with popular platforms such as Minecraft and Roblox. Additionally, Epic plans to roll out access to MetaHumans, a new ratings and review system, product FAQs, and enhanced analytics to improve the overall experience for publishers.
