Charcoal is one of many things that you can craft in Minecraft. It’s mainly used as a fuel source to help smelt or cook items you may have. In addition to creating new items with it, charcoal can also be used to make torches to help light up areas and keep hostile mobs away.

Find Some Trees

The first thing you’ll want to do is find some trees and start destroying them. You’ll only need two pieces of wood, but it’s recommended to carry more than two because you’ll quickly go through charcoal. Once you feel like you have enough wood in your inventory, you’re ready for the next step.

Make a Furnace

Making a furnace is relatively straightforward. All you’ll need is some cobblestone. Once you have enough, head to a crafting table and make one.

Now that you’ve made a furnace, place two wood blocks on the bottom left side. Shortly after you do that, you’ll see an icon letting you know that the wood is being crafted into charcoal.

Thankfully, the process of creating charcoal doesn’t take long at all. You should only wait a few seconds for it to be made, then grab it and put it in your inventory. Congratulations, you’ve successfully made charcoal! This should make your early game progress a bit easier.
