Keyboard Keys FAQ

The home keys on a keyboard refer to the set of keys that the fingers rest on when not typing, specifically for touch typing. For a standard QWERTY keyboard, these are the 'A', 'S', 'D', and 'F' keys for the left hand and the 'J', 'K', 'L', and ';' keys for the right hand. The thumbs usually rest on the space bar.

The Home key on a keyboard is used to move the cursor to the beginning of a line, document, or screen. Its exact function can vary depending on the software or operating system being used. In web browsers and other applications, it often scrolls to the top of the page.

On a musical keyboard, the black keys refer to the smaller raised keys that represent sharp and flat notes. They are used to play the half-step intervals between the natural notes (white keys). In standard Western music, these keys are identified as C#, D#, F#, G#, and A#.

A standard piano keyboard has 88 keys in total, which include 52 white keys and 36 black keys. The white keys correspond to the natural musical notes: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.

Not all keyboards have an 'Fn' key. The Fn key is typically found on laptop keyboards and some compact or multimedia keyboards. It is used to access secondary functions of other keys, such as adjusting screen brightness or volume. Desktop keyboards, especially full-sized ones, often do not include an Fn key.
