The last few days have been challenging for Windows 11 users, as numerous reports have surfaced about various bugs affecting their systems following the installation of the June 2024 preview update (KB5039302). Microsoft has acknowledged these issues and is actively working on solutions. However, a more concerning problem has emerged: an unidentified bug appears to be breaking the Windows Security app, and Microsoft seems unaware of this issue.
What are ‘regsvr.exe’ and ‘SecurityHealthProxyStub.dll’?
The ‘regsvr.exe’ utility allows users to manually register DLLs that may not have been registered during the Windows installation process. On the other hand, ‘SecurityHealthProxyStub.dll’ is a crucial component responsible for monitoring system security health. This DLL is automatically registered and installed during the Windows installation process, making any manual registration attempts unnecessary if it is already present on your system.
How can you recover the Windows Security app?
Unfortunately, there are no straightforward methods to restore the Windows Security app to its original working state without resorting to a system re-installation or performing a system restore. Therefore, it is advisable not to execute any potentially harmful commands on your primary computer if you are running Windows 11, even if curiosity gets the better of you.
Does it really disrupt your system protection?
The impact of this unidentified bug on system protection remains unclear. After executing the command that resulted in a blank screen upon opening the Windows Security app, we used Windows PowerShell with administrator privileges to check if real-time protection was still enabled. Running the following command:
Get-MpPreference | Select RealTimeProtectionEnabled
produced an output indicating that real-time protection was indeed enabled. To further investigate, we performed a quick scan using this PowerShell command:
Start-MpScan -ScanType QuickScan
This command did not return any visible results on the screen but silently scanned the PC for malware and updated the status within the Windows Security app. However, due to the app displaying only a blank screen, users cannot view critical details such as the number of files scanned, the exact time of scan completion, and the number of threats detected. Typically, these details would be accessible by navigating to the Virus & threat protection page within the Windows Security app.
As Microsoft works towards identifying and resolving this unidentified bug, users are left in a precarious situation where their system's security status remains uncertain. It is hoped that a swift resolution will restore confidence in the Windows Security app's functionality and reliability.
