Transitioning Away from VR
Mojang has made a significant announcement regarding the future of Minecraft on PlayStation platforms. The company revealed that it will discontinue support for PlayStation VR in early 2025. This decision follows the introduction of PlayStation VR support for the PS4 version of the game, which was made available through a complimentary update back in September 2020.
In a statement, Mojang expressed, “Our ability to support PlayStation VR has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025.” While players will still receive updates on their PlayStation consoles and can continue to enjoy the game without the VR component, the immersive experience offered by PlayStation VR will no longer be available.
Players can rest assured that their creative endeavors will remain intact. Mojang confirmed that users can continue building in their worlds and that Marketplace purchases, including Tokens, will still be accessible. However, the integration of PlayStation VR with Minecraft will cease following the final update.
Looking Ahead: A Native PS5 Version
In an exciting development, Mojang is currently working on a native version of Minecraft for the PlayStation 5. The first preview of this version was launched in June, allowing PS4 players to test the new features and provide valuable feedback ahead of its full release. However, the studio has yet to announce a specific launch window for the PS5 version or any plans regarding support for PlayStation VR2.
New Content Strategy
In addition to these changes, Mojang has shared its intention to revamp its content delivery strategy for Minecraft. The studio acknowledged the community’s desire for more frequent updates, stating, “We know that you want new Minecraft content more often, which is why we’re changing our feature development rhythm.”
Moving forward, players can expect a series of free game drops throughout the year, rather than a single update during the summer. These drops will vary in size and will introduce new features for players to explore more regularly, enhancing the overall gaming experience.
