Multiplicity FAQ

In the given polynomial y=(x^2-1)(x+2)(x+4), the factor (x^2-1) can be further factored into (x-1)(x+1). Each of these factors, (x-1), (x+1), (x+2), and (x+4), appears only once and therefore has a multiplicity of 1. The largest multiplicity in the factored polynomial is 1.

To form a polynomial with given zeros and multiplicities, start by writing the factors for each zero. For a zero 'a' with multiplicity 'm', the factor is (x-a)^m. Multiply these factors together to get the polynomial. For instance, given zeros 2 (multiplicity 3) and -1 (multiplicity 2), the polynomial is (x-2)^3 * (x+1)^2. Online calculators can automate this process by allowing input of zeros and their multiplicities and generating the polynomial expression.

To find the zeros of a polynomial function, set the polynomial equal to zero and solve for the variable. Factor the polynomial if possible. Each solution is a zero. To determine the multiplicity, observe the exponent on each factor corresponding to a zero. For example, in the polynomial P(x) = (x-1)^2(x+3), the zeros are x=1 with multiplicity 2 and x=-3 with multiplicity 1.

To determine the multiplicity of the root 2 in the equation y=x^4-2x^3-3x^2+4x+4, we use synthetic division or factoring. Factoring or dividing the polynomial by (x-2) reveals that (x-2) is not a factor, meaning 2 is not a root of the polynomial. Therefore, the multiplicity of the root 2 is 0 as 2 is not a root of the given polynomial.

Zeros of multiplicity refer to the roots of a polynomial that repeat more than once. If a zero 'a' has a multiplicity m, then (x-a)^m is a factor of the polynomial, and the graph of the polynomial will touch or be tangent to the x-axis at 'a'. A higher multiplicity indicates that the graph flattens as it touches the x-axis at that root. For example, in the polynomial (x-3)^2, the zero 3 has a multiplicity of 2.
