Redmond has officially announced the discontinuation of its modern art application, Paint 3D, later this year. Users have recently noticed a new banner atop the app, indicating that it will be removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4, with all updates ceasing permanently.
The Evolution of Paint 3D
Launched in 2017 as part of the Windows 10 Creators Update, Paint 3D was Microsoft’s ambitious endeavor to modernize the classic Paint app. It introduced a host of innovative features, including 3D modeling capabilities, a user-friendly interface, and support for layers and transparency. Users could even upload 3D objects to enhance their digital creations.
At its inception, Microsoft appeared to be betting on the future of 3D content. The debut of the HoloLens augmented reality headset fueled their vision, which included plans for Windows Phone users to scan real-world objects for incorporation into Paint 3D projects. However, these aspirations never fully materialized.
Despite its initial promise, Paint 3D struggled to achieve widespread adoption. Many users gravitated towards the simplicity of the original Paint app. When Microsoft attempted to phase out the classic version entirely, public outcry compelled the company to reverse its decision, ensuring that the beloved Paint would remain accessible.

In a twist of irony, while Microsoft has revitalized the decades-old Paint app in Windows 11, it quietly retires its would-be successor. It appears that casual users never fully embraced the 3D modeling features, which are better suited to more robust applications like Blender and Autodesk’s 3ds Max. For basic painting, image editing, and doodling, the original app’s straightforwardness prevailed.
However, Paint 3D is not alone in its fate. It joins a growing list of Windows 10-era applications being phased out as Windows 11 takes center stage. Other apps such as Cortana, Mail & Calendar, and the Tips app have also seen similar retirements as Microsoft aims to streamline its extensive app portfolio while continuing to introduce new features.
If you currently have Paint 3D installed, it should remain functional after the November cut-off date. However, with no forthcoming updates, it may be prudent to start exploring alternative options.
