In a significant development, the popular gaming platform Roblox has found itself banned in Türkiye. The announcement came via a tweet from Yılmaz Tunç, the country’s Minister of Justice, although he did not elaborate on the specific reasons behind this decision.
Concerns Over Content
Local media outlet Türkiye Today has suggested that the ban stems from concerns regarding inappropriate material present on the platform. This move follows alarming reports from Bloomberg, which highlighted that Roblox had reported over 13,000 instances of child exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in just 2023.
In response to the ban, a representative from Roblox emphasized the company’s longstanding commitment to user safety, particularly for its younger audience. “We’ve spent almost 20 years making Roblox one of the safest online platforms for our users,” the spokesperson stated in an interview with Eurogamer. “Ensuring the safety of our users is at the core of everything we do.”
The representative further expressed respect for local laws and regulations, acknowledging the shared goal of protecting children. “We look forward to working together to ensure Roblox is back online in Türkiye as soon as possible,” they added, signaling the company’s intention to address the concerns raised by Turkish authorities.
