San Fermin FAQ

Each year during the San Fermín festival, a total of 48 bulls are killed in bullfights, as there are 8 days of bullfighting and typically 6 bulls are fought and subsequently killed each day. The festival's bullfighting events are controversial for the ethical concerns they raise regarding animal cruelty.

San Fermín, held annually from July 6 to 14 in Pamplona, Spain, is famous for its running of the bulls event, where participants run in front of a group of bulls through the city streets. The festival also includes bullfights, parades, fireworks, music, and traditional dances. It honors Saint Fermín, the co-patron of Navarre.

During San Fermín, attendees can participate in or watch the famous running of the bulls, attend bullfights, enjoy parades, concerts, and street performances, and experience the vibrant nightlife. Visitors also participate in traditional events such as the opening

Traditional attire for San Fermín includes a white shirt and pants or skirt, red neckerchief (pañuelo), and a red waistband (faja). The white symbolizes the clean slate and joy of the festival, while the red honors the blood of Saint Fermín, the co-patron of Navarre, who was martyred.

'Primero de enero, dos de febrero, San Fermín' is a rhyme from a popular Spanish children’s song referring to the calendar months, with each date corresponding to the name of a saint or celebration. In this context, it highlights the importance of San Fermín, celebrated in July, in Spanish culture.

MasonT14 Had a fair experience at San Fermin. I loved some of the cultural aspects, but the noise and chaos were overwhelming at times. Enjoyed the food stalls, but I think they could improve on crowd control during the peak times.
