Boot your computer from a DBAN CD or USB drive, then follow the prompts to select the disk to erase. DBAN overwrites the hard drive with random data multiple times, ensuring data is not recoverable. Another method is to use built-in utilities in operating systems, such as the 'diskpart' command in Windows, which also has secure erase options.
