Most snakes lay eggs, while some give live birth. Egg-laying snakes include pythons, king cobras, and corn snakes. Snakes that give live birth include boa constrictors, garter snakes, and rattlesnakes. The type of reproduction is usually linked to the habitats they live in. Egg-laying is more common in warmer climates, while live birth is more common in cooler climates where eggs might not survive.

To keep snakes away from a chicken coop and eggs, secure the coop by sealing any gaps or holes where snakes could enter. Use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire for better protection. Keep the area around the coop clean and free of debris, which can attract rodents and, in turn, snakes. Installing a snake-proof fence around the coop, raising the coop off the ground, and using natural snake repellents like sulfur or clove oil can also help deter snakes.

Snakes mate through a process involving the intertwining of their bodies. The male snake uses his hemipenes (paired reproductive organs) to transfer sperm into the female. After successful mating, if the snake is oviparous (egg-laying), the female will lay eggs in a secluded, moist environment. She may lay anywhere from a few to several dozen eggs, which will incubate until they hatch. If the snake is viviparous (giving live birth), the embryos develop inside the female until live young are born.
