In June, Windows Latest revealed Microsoft’s intention to introduce a new Sticky Notes app designed to eventually supplant the existing version. True to their word, Microsoft has commenced the automatic installation of this new Sticky Notes (preview), regardless of user preference. However, it’s important to note that the update does not eliminate the legacy Sticky Notes app.
This means users may find both versions residing in their Start menu: the traditional “Sticky Notes” alongside the new “Sticky Notes (preview).” The new iteration boasts a deeper integration with OneNote, ensuring that anyone with OneNote installed will receive the new app seamlessly.
A representative from Microsoft Office informed Windows Latest that the rollout of the new Sticky Notes gained momentum in August, although it continues to be deployed gradually. As a result, some users may still be awaiting their turn. What sets the new Sticky Notes apart is its innovative support for screenshot-based notes, allowing users to capture and annotate images with a simple click.

For instance, when a user captures a screenshot of Microsoft.com using Sticky Notes, the link to the original page is embedded within the note. This feature enables Microsoft to retrieve the note when the user revisits the same document or website.
Unlike its predecessor, the new Sticky Notes operates as a standalone Windows desktop client, built on the OneNote framework rather than relying on Microsoft Edge WebView. Users must sign into their Microsoft accounts to unlock the full suite of features offered by the new app.
Mixed Reactions and Technical Glitches
The reception of the new Sticky Notes has been mixed. While many users appreciate the refreshed interface, others have expressed frustration over lagging during note scrolling.

As highlighted in a recent GIF by Windows Latest, the scrolling experience does not match the fluidity of the legacy app. This issue arises from the current lack of support for smooth scrolling, though it is anticipated that this will be rectified in future updates.
Additionally, some users have reported difficulties locating their existing notes upon launching the new Sticky Notes. In certain instances, the app fails to synchronize notes across different platforms. A user on the Feedback Hub lamented that synchronization issues led to the loss of half of their notes, with attempts to reset the app proving futile.
“Something acted up in sync and the app will not load the data locally; it is always loading the incorrect data from the cloud. And I have not been able to identify the option to have them load it locally,” the affected user shared.
For those encountering sync problems, the recommended solution involves signing out of the Sticky Notes app and signing back in. Alternatively, users can utilize OneNote to synchronize their notes across various platforms. As the new Sticky Notes remains in preview, it is not without its imperfections.
While Microsoft acknowledges the scrolling issues, they have yet to address the reports of synchronization problems. Users are free to continue utilizing the legacy version of Sticky Notes for the time being, should they prefer it. Feedback from users regarding the new Sticky Notes is welcomed in the comments section below.
