TCPView FAQ

To start TCPView, you need to first download it from the Sysinternals website. Extract the downloaded ZIP file to a folder of your choice. Within that folder, locate the executable file named 'Tcpview.exe' and double-click it to launch the application. No installation is required as it is a portable application. Once launched, TCPView will immediately start displaying the active TCP and UDP connections on your system.

TCPView is a Windows program that shows detailed listings of all TCP and UDP endpoints on your system, including the local and remote addresses and the state of TCP connections. To use it, download and extract the tool from the Sysinternals website, then run 'Tcpview.exe'. The main window will display all active connections, and you can sort and filter them by various criteria. Double-clicking on a connection provides more detailed information, and you can close connections or end processes directly from the interface.

In TCPView, a red entry indicates that the connection has been closed. During normal operation, TCP and UDP connections will appear in various colors to indicate different states. A red color specifically means that the connection was actively terminated, making it easier to identify recently closed connections. This visual cue helps users quickly understand the current state of their network connections.

Reading TCPView is straightforward. The main window displays a table with columns such as Process Name, PID (Process ID), Protocol (TCP or UDP), Local Address, Remote Address, and State (for TCP connections). Active connections are listed in real-time. You can sort the columns to organize the data as needed. Double-clicking on a connection row provides more detailed information about that connection. Colors are used to indicate state changes: green for new connections, yellow for changes, and red for closed connections.

TCPView works by using Windows APIs to collect information about all active TCP and UDP connections on your system. It queries the network stack to retrieve data on the local and remote addresses, the ports in use, and the state of each connection. This information is then displayed in a user-friendly interface. Because it updates in real-time, TCPView allows you to monitor network activity and troubleshoot issues effectively by providing detailed insights into how data is moving across your network interfaces.
