The virtual image of a microscope is the enlarged image seen through the eyepiece. After the objective lens creates a real, inverted image of the specimen, the eyepiece lens magnifies this image further. The virtual image appears to be located at a point from which the light rays diverge, making it an enlarged view of the specimen that cannot be projected onto a screen.

Virtual microscopes use digitized images captured from real microscope slides and allow users to view them through software applications. These images are often high-resolution and can be manipulated similar to how a traditional microscope would be used, by zooming in and out, panning, and rotating. The interface often mimics the experience of using a physical microscope, making it user-friendly for educational and research purposes.

A real image is formed when light converges and passes through a lens, showing the image on a screen or projection. This image is inverted and can be captured on a camera. A virtual image, on the other hand, is not formed by actual light convergence but appears to be at a location from which the light rays appear to diverge. In an optical microscope, the virtual image is what you see when looking through the eyepiece, as it appears larger and cannot be projected onto a screen.

A virtual microscope typically does not have physical objectives as a real microscope does. Instead, it provides different magnification levels through software.
