Windows shortcuts serve as a streamlined gateway to frequently accessed files and applications, yet the small arrow overlay on these icons can detract from the visual appeal of a user’s desktop. Fortunately, there are straightforward methods to eliminate these arrows, enhancing the aesthetics of both the desktop and File Explorer.
Method 1: Using the Windows Registry
Important Note: Editing the Windows Registry carries inherent risks; improper modifications can lead to system instability. It is advisable to back up your registry before proceeding with any changes.
- Initiate the process by pressing Win + R to open the Run dialog box. Type
regedit and hit Enter. - Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer . - Right-click on the Explorer folder, select New, and then choose Key.
- Name this new key
Shell Icons . If a folder with this name already exists, simply access that existing folder. - Right-click on the Shell Icons folder, select New, and then choose String Value.
- Name this string value
29 and double-click it to open. - In the Value data field, input:
%windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-50 . - To implement the changes, restart Windows Explorer. Right-click on the taskbar, select Task Manager, locate Windows Explorer in the list, right-click it, and choose Restart.
Upon completion of these steps, the shortcut arrows should be removed. Should you wish to restore them in the future, simply delete the Shell Icons key you created.
Method 2: Using Winaero Tweaker
For those who prefer a more user-friendly approach, various third-party tools can facilitate the removal of shortcut arrows without the need for manual registry edits. In this instance, we will utilize Winaero Tweaker.
- Begin by downloading and installing the software, available in either Standard or Portable mode.
- Once installed, launch the application and navigate to
Shortcuts > Shortcut Arrow . - Select No Arrow, and then click Restart Explorer to apply the changes.
