Modded Nintendo Switch with 8GB of RAM Shows Promise for Running PC Games
A recent YouTube video by user naga has highlighted the capabilities of a modded Nintendo Switch with 8GB of RAM, showcasing its ability to run multiple PC games with decent performance. The system, equipped with a 2.6 GHz CPU and a 1.26 GHz GPU, runs on an L4T Ubuntu 18.04 with custom kernel OS, utilizing Box64 + Wine for compatibility.
Despite the expected lower resolution, some games perform surprisingly well on this modded system. Titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Stray manage to achieve around 30 FPS, while older games like Devil May Cry even surpass that mark. Fallout New Vegas runs at 60 FPS in enclosed spaces and around 30 FPS in more open areas, showcasing the system’s potential.
This demonstration further emphasizes how the limited amount of RAM on the original Nintendo Switch impacted its performance. The modded system even ran Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom at 4K resolution, highlighting the difference additional RAM can make.
Fortunately, Nintendo appears to be addressing this issue in future consoles, with rumors suggesting that the successor to the Nintendo Switch will feature 12GB of RAM. This upgrade could lead to smoother gameplay and improved texture quality, potentially rivaling even the Xbox Series S.
