Future Features and Timeline
Among the most intriguing developments is the potential for users to conduct audio and video calls via compatible third-party applications. However, this feature is projected to be available only by 2027, contingent on successful implementation. By 2025, Meta plans to introduce the ability to create groups within these third-party applications, with voice and video calling functionalities following two years later.
Meta expressed its commitment to evolving user experience, stating, “After six months of building new features, creating a new user experience, and getting feedback from potential partners and other stakeholders, we wanted to share an update on what third-party chats will look like on WhatsApp and Messenger.”
Enhanced User Notifications and Inbox Management
In addition to the aforementioned features, Meta is set to roll out a new notifications system within both WhatsApp and Messenger. This feature will keep users informed about the availability of new third-party messaging applications. Users will have the flexibility to select which third-party apps they wish to receive messages from and how they prefer to manage their inboxes.
Responding to user feedback, Meta will also introduce an option for maintaining a separate inbox for messages received through third-party integrations. Users can choose to have these messages directed to a distinct folder or opt for a combined inbox that consolidates all communications. Importantly, users will retain the ability to modify this setting at any time.
Meta acknowledged the complexities involved in building third-party chat functionalities, emphasizing the importance of privacy and security. “Building third-party chats is technically challenging and preserving privacy and security is a shared responsibility. We have already come a long way, but there is a lot more to build,” the company noted.
