Bethesda Game Studios Montreal has taken a significant step by applying to form a union with the Quebec Labour Board. The new bargaining unit, known as One BGS MTL, announced its intention to unionize with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) via a post on Twitter.

While the exact number of staff members represented by this unit and the specific types of workers involved remain unclear, the goal is clear. One BGS MTL aims to create a supportive workplace that nurtures creativity and talent, ultimately leading to the continued development of top-tier video games.

Unionization Efforts and Objectives

The unionization effort is driven by a desire to secure job security, enhance transparency, accountability, and flexibility, and ensure fair compensation for all employees. By having a seat at the table, workers hope to shape a work environment that values their contributions and provides a platform for their voices to be heard.

If successful, Bethesda Game Studios Montreal would become the second ZeniMax studio to unionize, following the formation of ZeniMax Workers United by quality assurance staff in January 2023. Microsoft’s existing labor neutrality agreement with the CWA, which was extended to ZeniMax employees earlier this year, streamlines the unionization process by eliminating the need for separate recognition from the tech giant.
