In a recent update, Squid Shock, the creative force behind the enchanting game Bõ: Path of the Teal Lotus, shared insights into the challenges they are currently facing due to their publisher, Humble Games. The studio took to Twitter to express its concerns regarding the impact of Humble’s recent restructuring on their project.

Turning to Community Support

As the situation unfolds, Squid Shock has made the decision to seek financial backing through Patreon to sustain ongoing development efforts. The studio indicated that the anticipated level of post-launch support from Humble Games has not materialized, prompting this shift in strategy. Bõ: Path of the Teal Lotus was officially launched on July 17th, but the aftermath has proven to be less than smooth.

Compounding the challenges, Squid Shock has reported a loss of access to essential systems that are critical for updating and conducting quality assurance on the console versions of the game. Fortunately, the team retains access to the Steam version, which they successfully updated this week.

Understanding the Industry Landscape

Despite the turmoil caused by Humble’s operational changes, Squid Shock has emphasized that their sentiments toward the individuals they collaborated with at Humble Games remain positive. In their statement, they clarified, “Our launch was not without its challenges; our publisher shutting down has meant we have missed out on critical post-launch support which may put our studio’s future at risk.”

The studio further articulated their perspective, stating, “We want to make it crystal clear that this was in no way the fault of the Humble Games team we worked with. It is just a sad time in the industry and ultimately, we understand.” This acknowledgment reflects a broader understanding of the complexities and uncertainties that can arise within the gaming industry, particularly in times of transition.
