Factorio’s highly anticipated interstellar expansion, Space Age, is set to launch on October 21. Developer Wube has strategically chosen this date to allow ample time for final polishing after summer vacations and to address any potential bugs before the holiday season.
Three Years in the Making
The Space Age expansion has been in development for over three years since its initial announcement in February 2021, making it a significant addition to the base game. The expansion will introduce a fifth new world, described as an “enigmatic” planet with unique gameplay elements, shrouded in mystery due to its dark and cold environment.
New Gameplay Mechanics
Prior to embarking on deep-space exploration, players will need to focus on creating space platforms, flying factories that facilitate cargo transport between planets. The addition of elevated rails will bring a new level of challenge and opportunity to rail networks, while new “quality” tiers will offer bonuses and benefits to various in-game items, machines, and equipment.
Enhanced Combat and Immersive Music
Space Age will also introduce new enemies and defenses, adding to the complexity of gameplay across different planets. Composer Petr Wasjar has crafted new “space age music” to enhance the immersive experience of the expansion.
Major 2.0 Update
In addition to the Space Age expansion, Factorio will receive a major 2.0 update that will be available to all players for free. The update will include smarter worker robots, new rail systems, a remote view feature, an improved fluid system, and various other enhancements.
Overall, the Space Age expansion and the 2.0 update promise to unlock new possibilities for players to achieve incredible feats in Factorio, setting the stage for even more remarkable accomplishments in the future.
