In a recent development, Microsoft has taken a step to address the mixed reactions surrounding the introduction of a dedicated Copilot key on new keyboards for Windows PCs. While many users expressed skepticism about the necessity of a key designated for a feature that may not appeal to everyone, the tech giant has now unveiled an update for Windows Insiders that allows for the remapping of this key.
New Customization Options
By default, the Copilot key is programmed to launch Microsoft’s Copilot AI application on any compatible Windows PC. However, with the rollout of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22635.4225 (Beta Channel), users will have the flexibility to remap the key to open a different application of their choice. This enhancement aims to provide a more personalized experience for users who may prefer to utilize the key for tasks beyond the Copilot feature.
It is important to note that the remapping functionality is limited to applications packaged and signed in the MSIX format. Microsoft emphasizes that this requirement ensures that the applications adhere to security and privacy standards, thereby safeguarding user data. To customize the key’s function, users can navigate to the Settings app, then proceed to the Text Input section within the Personalization area.
As this feature is currently being tested by beta users, it is anticipated that it will eventually be integrated into stable builds of Windows 11. While Microsoft has a history of introducing features to Windows Insiders that may not make it to the final version, the potential cancellation of this remapping option could have negative repercussions, given the interest it has generated among users.
