Enhanced Features for PC Gamers

Despite being released two years ago, the PC version of Ragnarök is poised to be one of the standout games of the year. This isn’t merely a straightforward port; it’s a reimagining that enhances Kratos’ journey in ways that surpass the original PS5 experience. Sony Santa Monica has partnered with Jetpack Interactive to integrate a range of PC-centric features, ensuring that Ragnarök takes full advantage of high-end hardware.

The PC port will support unlimited framerate and 4K resolution, along with advanced upscaling technologies such as Nvidia DLSS 3.7, AMD FSR 3.1, and Intel XESS 1.3. For gamers with expansive monitors, Ragnarök will also offer support for 21:9 ultra-widescreen and 32:9 super ultra-widescreen formats, allowing for a truly immersive experience.

Interestingly, the Steam page for Ragnarök highlights “increased geometric detail” and enhanced lighting and shadows as exclusive features for the PC version. Whether this indicates a significant overhaul or simply improved visibility through higher resolution remains to be seen. However, for those equipped with powerful PCs, it’s not unreasonable to consider Ragnarök a full-fledged remaster.

Players should be prepared for a substantial storage requirement, as the game demands a hefty 190 GB on PC. Additionally, Ragnarök boasts full compatibility with the Steam Deck, making it an excellent choice for gaming on the go. The expansive zones, particularly in the Dwarf homeland of Svartalfheim, offer numerous side activities that can now be enjoyed anywhere.

However, it’s important to note that an external PlayStation Network login is required to play Ragnarök on PC, a trend that has been observed with other PlayStation-exclusive titles. While the PlayStation overlay and trophy compatibility are not yet confirmed for Ragnarök, their inclusion seems likely based on previous ports.

The PC version will also include the free Valhalla DLC, providing an excellent opportunity for newcomers to explore this additional content. While it may not delve deeply into plot or character development, the DLC introduces new Greek enemies and equipment that pay homage to Kratos’ earlier adventures. Fans of roguelikes will appreciate the randomly generated levels and the new reset system featured in Valhalla.

For those who have yet to experience Ragnarök, the PC port presents an ideal entry point. The game is known for its innovative one-shot cinematic camera that creates a seamless narrative experience without interruptions from loading screens or cutscenes. This immersive quality sets it apart from many titles, drawing players deeper into its richly crafted world.

As players traverse the nine realms, they will encounter a wealth of side quests and collectibles, enhancing the game’s depth and replayability. The attention to detail is remarkable, with authentic Norse script engravings adorning runes and monuments throughout the landscape, all of which will be beautifully rendered in 4K.

At its core, Ragnarök tells a more intimate story compared to its Greek predecessors, focusing on the relationship between Kratos and his son Atreus as they navigate the challenges of Fimbulwinter.
