Microsoft is set to revolutionize the structure of Windows updates with the upcoming Windows 11 version 24H2 and Server 2025. The tech giant is introducing cumulative checkpoint updates to streamline the update process and make it more efficient.

According to reports from the tech community, these checkpoint updates will be released regularly, although Microsoft has not specified a precise schedule. It is expected that these updates will be rolled out every few months, serving as incremental delta packages that only replace content that has changed since the last cumulative checkpoint.

The primary goal behind this new approach is to reduce the burden on networks, PCs, and users by minimizing the installation of large cumulative packages. Instead, users can expect smaller, quicker-to-download packages for most updates, with the larger cumulative packages being reserved for less frequent installations.

The Routine for Admins and Users Remains Unchanged

For administrators and users, the new update structure should not bring about any significant changes. However, there is one exception to note. Updates downloaded from the update catalog will now consist of multiple packages: all checkpoints released for the Windows version to date, along with a cumulative package containing all patches since the most recent checkpoint. These packages can be installed sequentially using existing management tools.

Microsoft has been experimenting with update installation and download technologies for some time now. With Windows 11, Windows Update now scans for specific components of a cumulative update that need to be downloaded, reducing the overall download volume. However, this process adds a computational load to determine the necessary components, potentially leading to longer update durations.
