Google is actively enhancing its Android Auto platform, focusing on new features that promise to elevate the in-car experience. Among these developments is the ongoing support for “local media,” which aims to streamline how users interact with their vehicle’s audio systems.
Revamping Radio Control
As previously reported in July, one of the key functionalities under consideration is the ability to control the car’s radio directly through Android Auto. Recent updates indicate that Google is making strides in this area. The latest version, Android Auto 12.7, hints at the potential for users to add and remove “Favorite” radio stations via an app interface. Following this, the Android Auto 12.8 beta introduces features related to “Car Local Media,” further enhancing user engagement with their vehicle’s audio capabilities.

Additionally, the recent updates have introduced new icons for both radio and local media playback, although these features have yet to be activated for users.
Gemini Live Integration
In a parallel development, Google appears to be preparing for the integration of Gemini Live support within Android Auto. A newly discovered string references a codename associated with Gemini, suggesting the capability to “start conversation” may soon be available. However, like the radio features, this functionality is not yet live. Notably, some assets related to Gemini have also been included, reinforcing the anticipation surrounding this upgrade.

The term “Kitt_live” has surfaced in previous discussions about Google’s voice functionality in vehicles, indicating a long-standing interest in enhancing in-car voice interactions. The Gemini Live feature was recently launched alongside the Pixel 9 series and is currently rolling out to Android users in English, accompanied by Gemini Advanced.
While the timeline for the rollout of these features remains uncertain, the ongoing challenges with Google Assistant on Android Auto suggest that a significant upgrade is on the horizon, aimed at improving user experience and functionality.
