Amazon to Discontinue Appstore on Android Devices by 2025

Apps & Games / Mobile / Android / Amazon to Discontinue Appstore on Android Devices by 2025
27 Feb 2025

Amazon has announced a significant shift in its digital offerings strategy by deciding to discontinue the Appstore on Android devices, effective August 20, 2025. This strategic move marks a refocus on enhancing user experience on devices proprietary to Amazon.

Beginning on the stated date, developers will no longer have the capability to submit new applications to the Appstore for Android devices. Despite this halt, the Appstore will remain fully operational on Amazon’s Fire devices, indicating a pivot towards concentrating their resources and efforts on their own ecosystem.

Impact on the Coins Program

Alongside the discontinuation of the Appstore on Android, Amazon will also terminate its Coins digital currency program on the same day. The Coins initiative allowed users to make purchases within the Appstore in a convenient manner, effectively functioning as a digital currency alternative to regular payment methods. With the program ending, Amazon has committed to refunding users for any remaining Coins they still possess at the time of termination. This ensures that consumers do not face any monetary loss with the discontinuation.

Reasons Behind the Decision

The decision to cease Appstore operations on Android devices has largely been driven by the minimal usage of the service on non-Amazon devices. The company has recognized that the Appstore's usage outside of its proprietary technology was not meeting expectations, prompting a shift in their strategy. Amazon has expressed an intention to concentrate on improving and refining the Appstore experience specifically for its own range of devices, where they see greater benefits and a more engaged user base.

In a communication to developers, Amazon emphasized the rationalized focus and reassured that its Appstore on Amazon Fire devices will continue to receive attention and development. This decision reflects a broader trend of tech companies opting to curate more controlled and optimized experiences by focusing on their proprietary environments.

As Amazon looks towards the future, the company appears poised to refine its digital storefront, leveraging their indigenous devices as a core platform. This change, while potentially inconvenient to some, particularly developers and users of Android devices, signifies a recalibration of resources and effort towards areas that can potentially offer more substantial returns and user satisfaction.
