Google has successfully addressed a significant technical glitch that led to widespread disruptions of its Android app over the weekend. The issue, which emerged late Saturday night and persisted into early Sunday, left many users grappling with a frustrating “Google keeps stopping” error message.
Details of the Disruption
The malfunction began shortly before midnight Pacific Time (PT) and was fully resolved by 1:11 AM PT on Sunday. Users primarily encountered problems when attempting to conduct searches through the Google app, which would crash immediately upon launch. Additionally, the Google Search bar widget displayed previous queries before failing, while the Pixel Launcher search bar briefly showed results before shutting down.
Other features, such as Google Discover and Voice Search, were also rendered inoperative, leading to a cycle of persistent error messages for affected users. The disruption was not confined to a particular version of the app; both stable and beta versions across various Android operating systems—including Android 15, 14, and earlier iterations—were impacted. Popular devices such as the Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy series were among those affected.
Continuity of Other Services
Despite the challenges faced by the Google app, other services remained unaffected. Users could still access Google’s search engine through Chrome for Android, and tools like Gemini, Google Assistant, Google Lens, and Circle to Search continued to function normally.
Google's Response
In light of the service disruption, Google acknowledged the issue and advised users to clear the app cache and data as a temporary remedy. The company later confirmed that the problem had been resolved, stating that no further updates were necessary. Google’s search status dashboard reflected this progress, indicating that the issue with serving had been mitigated and that systems were stabilizing.
For those still experiencing difficulties with the Google App on Android, the company reiterated the suggestion to clear app cache and data through the Settings app. The dashboard initially indicated that updates would follow within 12 hours but later clarified that the issue had been fully addressed and no further updates would be forthcoming.
